Art, Murals, and Creative Adventures: Why Grand Forks, BC Is an Unexpected Arts Destination

Grand Forks, BC: Where the Arts Scene is Anything But Boring

You might expect hiking trails, river views, and maybe the odd big horn sheep sighting when you roll into small-town British Columbia—but a wild, selfie-worthy art scene? Probably not. And that’s exactly why Grand Forks is about to become your new favourite artsy detour.

Tucked between mountains and sunshine, this quiet little town has been busy turning heads (and blank walls) into a living gallery. So grab your camera, your curiosity, and maybe a snack—you’re about to get cultured in the best way.

️ Big Walls. Bigger Personality.

Downtown Grand Forks is basically an outdoor art gallery—if that gallery also had coffee shops, vintage finds, and a cheeky sense of humour.

The star of the show? Over 90 murals by local legend Paul Archer, who has quite literally painted the town. His work is bold, playful, and anything but stuffy. Think King Kong taking a selfie, a back-alley T-Rex trying to eat you (in a loving way), and a heartfelt tribute to Olympic swimmer James Dergousoff—right outside the Aquatic Centre, naturally.

There are angel wings for your Instagram feed, local faces immortalized in technicolour, and quirky scenes hidden down alleys and laneways. Murals pop up on fences, garages, and even private homes—because in Grand Forks, art doesn’t wait for permission.

️ Mural Map = Treasure Map

Turn your stroll into a full-blown adventure. Swing by the Visitor Centre inside Gallery 2 and pick up a Grand Forks Mural Tour Map. Warning: this hunt is highly addictive. You’ll start with one or two and suddenly find yourself sprinting across town shouting “I see another one!” like a kid spotting Pokémon.

️ Gallery 2 – Art With a Side of History

Housed in a gorgeous 1911 courthouse (because nothing says “we take art seriously” like a historic building), Gallery 2 is the official arts HQ of Grand Forks.

Inside, you’ll find rotating exhibits from both emerging and established Canadian artists, including some that’ll make you stop and say, “Wait… that’s art?” (Yes. And it’s fabulous.)

The gift shop is also a treasure trove of locally made goods—ceramics, textiles, jewelry, and other delightful things you didn’t know you needed until now. It’s like Etsy, but in real life and without the shipping fees. www.gallery2grandforks.ca

Arts Everywhere. Literally.

If you think the murals and gallery are the whole show, think again. Grand Forks’ artsy energy spills out in every direction—from forest studios to farm-side galleries.

  • Spencer Hill Orchard and Gallery combines organic farming with fine art. Yes, you can pick an apple and ponder a painting in the same afternoon.
  • At The Sculptors Studio, watch creativity get carved, chiselled, and occasionally whacked into shape. Bonus: you can take a piece home, and not just in your camera roll.
  • The Grand Forks Performing Arts School is run by a former Cirque du Soleil performer and an Olympic athlete. So, no pressure—but if you’ve ever wanted to somersault your way into a new hobby, here’s your chance. grandforksperformingarts.com

From open studios and workshops to spontaneous creative pop-ups, there’s always something brewing in Boundary Country. Ask a local. They’ll probably invite you to a show.
